Methadone is prescribed to prevent withdrawal symptoms from heroin and other opiates. It's use has unique ramifications during pregnancy.

Also used for chronic pain management, methadone is a long-acting synthetic opioid drug. Heroin addicts who become pregnant have few choices that can safeguard their health. Even if they want to quit, the effects of heroin withdrawal can endanger the unborn.

Going Cold Turkey

Stopping opioid use abruptly causes withdrawal symptoms: runny nose, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, painful muscle aches and loss of appetite. During the first trimester, narcotic withdrawal can result in spontaneous abortion of pregnancy. The middle trimester is a "window of opportunity" when narcotic withdrawal is least harmful. In the last months of pregnancy, however, the risk of premature birth during heroin detoxification is highest.

Standard of Care

In 1998 The National Institute of Health recommended methadone maintenance for pregnancy. Not only is pregnancy loss prevented by methadone, but by ensuring a safe source of narcotics for the mother, the fetus is protected from acquiring blood-borne diseases through needle sharing, a common practice among addicts.

Methadone dosage must be titrated by a professional to avoid respiratory depression and death.

Methadone clinics administer one dose per day, so the mother must travel to the clinic site daily.

Methadone is a pregnancy risk category B drug, meaning that either animal studies have shown no risk but there are no controlled studies on pregnant women or, animal studies have shown adverse effects that were not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the first trimester and there is no evidence of harm in later trimesters of pregnancy.

Side Effects of Methadone in Pregnancy

Side effects of methadone for pregnant women include nausea, vomiting and severe constipation.

The unborn baby will show decreased viability on fetal monitor strips taken during the last trimester of pregnancy. Opiate antagonists, a classification of drugs commonly given for pain in labor, will cause a methadone-dependent mother to have symptoms of detox, making her more uncomfortable and endangering her newborn. Doctors and nurses must be made aware of any patients who are currently on methadone maintenance therapy at the time of birth. Mothers should understand this and be prepared to inform physicians who are covering for their regular obstetrician and nurses who are changing shifts, in case they have not taken time to read the chart or gotten adequate information from the relieved person.

Babies born addicted to methadone will experience withdrawal symptoms. An infant's withdrawal symptoms can be managed with barbiturate drugs. Although they are generally considered safe when used as prescribed, no one knows the effects of these medications on early bonding behavior.

Detoxing Methadone after Pregnancy Ends

Because of the drug's long half-life gradual weaning from methadone is easier than abrupt heroin withdrawal. Addicts need social support systems such as counseling and 12-step programs like Narcotics Anonymous to maintain motivation and stay clean.

you should not take any drugs while being pregnant if it is at risk for your baby it should not be allowed at all because when your baby comes out she/he will be in pain an be sick an a baby should not take drugs being that little its brain and body is not all the way developed so whoever says its ok to take methadone while being pregnant is stupid!

I think I would take the methadone rather than take the chance of relapse and possibly harming my child with a lifelong illness or disability. I am not that strong when it comes to drugs. It takes away all my pains, memories, fears and all emotion and care, I was so tired or feeling, now thats all I earn, to feel all the emotions I was so terrified of, now I am terrified I will relapse and harm my child even more...I choose to take methadone while pregnant...This is my story these are my reasons. I am no longer afraid. Thank you for this information, although it dosent end here.
Yours Truly, L.
32 years old, took oxycontin 2years, clean 3 months, been on Methadone 2 months....and life does go on!

Good for you L. Im with you 100%. Obv non-addicts wrote the previous comments and have no idea the daily fight is to stay clean. I too chose methadone for me and my baby. Uneducated ppl really need to listen to those in the situation than just judge based on their opinions

If u are already in the methadone program and become pregnant by surprise there is no way to get off of it without harming your baby.Studies show methadone is safe to take while pregnant. So,all of you who are making these comments about being stupid to do so,educate yourself before u judge someone

If you have a problem, you should not be having kids. Maybe methadone is safe, maybe what little research has been done has not uncovered any side effects YET.

I'm not going to lie, I'm so scared & carry alot of guilt about giving birth to my baby. I am 4 months pregnant & I have been on methadone for 6 months. I am at 55 mg. I keep hearing that anything over 80 mg is when the baby is more likely to have withdrawls. I tried to quit methadone. Huge mistake. As soon as the doctor told me the baby feels what I am feeling, I immediately had a change of heart & continued the program. This pregnancy has taken alot out of me. I am very sick and tired all day everyday. Is there anything to help this?

Studies are now indicating that the amount of methadone a mom is on does NOT determine the likelihood of the baby having NAS. Approx. 65% will have NAS, but this can happen to a mom on 20mgs or not at all to a mom on 250mgs. The MOST important thing is that the mom is on a dose that keeps both her and the baby comfortable and withdrawal-free for a full 24 hours. If the mom is feeling even slight withdrawals, the baby is feeling them much worse.

One thing that was incorrect in the article is referring to the baby as being "addicted" to methadone. There is a big difference, medically speaking, in physical dependence and addiction. Addiction requires not JUST physical dependence, but also a set of behaviors that newborn babies are incapable of displaying, such as continued use despite harm, lying and manipulating to get more, using more than prescribed, etc. Stable, compliant methadone patients--and their newborns--do NOT meet the definition of "addiction" to methadone. The word "addiction" is inflammatory, especially when used about a baby, and inaccurate.

Methadone was first made in 1937, and since then thousands of babys have been born to mothers who used methadone while pregnant. So anyone who believes that thier could be problems they just dont know about yet, that is your opinion and not true.

I have a 17 month old son, and I am 12 weeks and 4 days pregnant, with my second child who will be born on methadone. I have severe pain, and opiate dependence. I have had miscarriages before the birth of my son from trying to stop using my opiate medications, I had the 17 week miscarrige of my daughter from stopping. So I reccomend that pregnant women use methadone, or detox under a doctors supervision at a hospital, if possible. My son when born showed no signs of withdrawal, he was and is perfectly healthy. He stayed in the hospital 3 days longer than usual to be monitored incase of withdrawal, I was then on 60 mg of methadone a day. I love my children. Myself and my doctor praise methadone as a life saver and a miracle medication. Methadone is almost never passed through breast milk, and if it does it is in such small amounts, that there is nothing to worry about. People love to judge, people always have to have someone to look down on. I am grateful to God for blessing me with my wonderful healthy son and my baby on the way, and allowing me to carry to term, and for my babys to be free of any pain and withdrawals, I am also grateful to God for providing me with the pain relief I get through methadone, I used to have to take oxycontin 2 80mgs and moriphine 3 100mgs tablets daily, until I found a good doctor who helped me and my unborn child/ren. I am 28 years old and I have used opiates since I was 15 years old.

If methadone has been proven to protect the fetus from harm and reduce stress from withdrawl to the mother then I believe it is a life saver. Although, once the second trimester has began, doctors should decrease the amount given to the mother and fetus. I don't support the administration of methadone to pregnant mothers for the entire pregnancy. It sad to think of a newborn struggling from withdraws from any drug. I think addicts think its ok to be dependant on methadone because a "doctor" it administering the drug. I understand that methadone can be helpful to recover from herion addiction, but I do not support long term use..Pregnant or not.

I am pregnant with my second child and have been on methadone 5 years, i am down to 1ml of meth and i am 8weeks pregnant but would like to stop taking it now since its such a low amount but i am confused about the effect it will have on the baby. It seems this subject is very controversial but to all those who judge you cant understand how difficult an phyical addiction is unless you been through it yourself and those who do overcome it should be respected. i live a normal life with a hard working husband and a beautiful heatlhy daughter who is loved and cared for. im proff people do change and i thank GOD for my daughter.

Just to fill a few of you in on the facts...

I gave birth to a healthy baby boy march 29.2009 wile being on Methadone, My dose was 43 mg's once daily and I was clean for 3 years. My son did not experience ANY WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS what so ever. All baby's are different but some do not experience withdrawal. He has no birth defects, problems with speech or behavior. I will admit we did take a chance on getting pregnant knowing the risks but I do not regret it. I believe if a couple is stable on their methadone and ready to start a family then so be it, Just because we made mistakes in the past doesn't mean we cannot get back on track and start a family .

If the baby does show withdrawal symptoms the baby will NOT BE IN PAIN, Hospitals slowly wean baby's off methadone using Morphine in very small amounts (ie. .4 of a MG)

TO THE WOMEN WHO IS PREGNANT; please do not feel guilty about being pregnant, you were once an addict and obviously you are not any more. The only way you should feel guilty is if you are using other drugs. I to went threw hell with my pregnancy, i had morning sickness way to much and was constantly tired. if it's morning sickness that's killing you ask your doctor for a morning sickness pill called Diclectin. it works wonders and wont mess up your methadone. I also found thinking of the little bundle of joy im bringing into this world made things alot easier @ times. Also keep in mind, when you do have your child, be completely honest with your doc's and nurses. you may run into a few ppl who do not agree with your decision to have a baby on methadone, don't let those people get to you.

Dear L, You say "drugs" took away all your feelings and sorrows etc... but don't forget Methadone is still a DRUG - a legal drug, nevertheless a very powerful, most addictive synthetic opiate, as in PAIN KILLER...So, sorry to say but until you are 100% clean of all external pain killers you can not feel 100%.

We will only be certain of a 100% healthy human being, that is someone without easy inclination to illness or even drug addiction, with time. Of course, if parents are well informed on how to feed their children, not just through healthy food for body but for mind and spirit, they will have an even greater chance of becoming a healthy, undependable human being.

Doctors DO NOT have all the answers. Lets stop giving them so much credit (and money for that matter). POWER to the individual.

Meant to say, lets not give traditional medicine so much credit. Doctors and pharmaceutical companies should always be questioned.

wow... i have read alot of comments... as for all who think they know what they r talking about make me laugh! i love the one who has been clean for 2yrs and says... if u have problems u shouldnt have a baby... who do u think u are? methadone has been around since the early 1900's. so i think there is alot of research! some people think just because ur on it u have done every drug known to man. news flash, as for myself i got addicted to pain killers after breaking my foot! i have never shot them up, or snorted them. even though im on methadone, and pregnant this does not say whether or not im a bad mother, or shouldnt have children. i have a lil girl, and a boy on the way. i am not proud to be on this, but it beats my daughter not having a mother. because thats where i was going to end up, and anyone else who suffers from addiction. i just thank god there is something out there to help people. so for anyone who thinks differnt... do some research, and try to look at the bigger picture. i use to be u, i hated drugs, methadone, and any kind of thing like that. both of my parents were addicts. my mom became a drug councelor, and my dad got clean a yr before he died. i hated both of them for what they did. but look where im at... my point is dont say it will never happen to me, bcuz u never know!!!

No child should be ingesting drugs. Methadone is a drug! These babies have no choice in the matter, and it's very unfair to them. Justifying it by saying that you could miscarry otherwise is a crock. It's an addiction, you lie to yourself to make it seem "right". It's not okay. It's just as bad as giving your child heroin at ten. I think anyone that takes methadone while pregnant is an unfit parent. These children shouldn't be put through all that. You people make me sick.

I am on 60 mgstwice a day for pain. I delivered a healthy baby two yrs ago on methadone, and I am now pregnant again. Of course I worry about my baby being dependant at birth, but people cannot understand what you go through without walking one day in my shoes. IF MY DOCTOR ADMINISTERS IT WITHOUT CONCERN, then you judging individuals who have commented on here can chill with the rude and judgmental remarks. There is NOTHING more important than my childs safety

i have been on methadone for nearly 2 years, people have to understand we choose to do drugs but for some unfortunate people its away of life, Its also an illness and people need to be less judgemental and more sencitive to what they go through trying to get of it, thats why people relaps often because its so hard, physically, mentally, emoionally draining, I am on 15 ml a day now and its the only medicine that has been a sucsess, and for those who are pregnant and on meth, work close with your doctor but try not to worry as i havnt heard of any baby that has suffered withdrawals, and people these days are too judgemental as all they have never been in that position.

I recently had a baby and I was on methadone and my son is 100% healthy.I don't believe that it is wrong to take methadone,it is safer than any street drug and the doctors approve of it.I had a son that was born addicted to heroin and I was not going to make the same mistake again. So for the people who are against pregnant women taking methadone do your research and you'll see the benefits, and for guest # 1 learn how to spell right especially if you're going to criticize others.

I am currently 17 weeks pregnant and I am also on methadone. I am on 75 mg a day. I believe that anyone who is on methadone and become pregnant ahould proceed with the methadone. Many people look down on us saying we are hurting our children and making them become addicts but methadone is safe for both mother and child. One person said that if one is on drugs they shouldnt have kids, well mine wasn't planned and mine unborn baby is COMPLETELY HEALTHY. My doctor actually said that my baby is so healthy and has the best heart beat, that he would use it as an example to other patients becasue everything is IMMACULATE and its an ideal heart beat and growth. So for all the people who look down on expecting moms for being on methadone, I suggest that you actually research methadone and how it is with unborn babies before you say your opinion becuase its not right. Also for people who aren't on methadone, you guys will NEVER understand the way we feel and how we made our decision because your not fealing with it first hand. I bet that if any of you were in any of our situation you would feel different. So for all the expecting mothers out there.... Your doing what is right for you and your child and dont listen to anyone who tries to put you down!

Hi
I just found out a few days ago I am pregnant (probably a few weeks since I missed my period a week ago)and at the same time I had just started on methadone for an opiate addiction.I am so scared and was crying reading some of these comments! This pregnancy has come as a surprise, just when I thought I was doing the right thing by going on methadone for my addiction,I find out Im pregnant!
I only been on methadone for 3 days 20mlgs.I feel like I am making the wrong decision now.I feel like I should just quit the methadone while Im ahead.I just want whats best for my baby now instead of me.Since its so early in the pregnancy I want to quit my methadone treatment.I dont want my baby born with withdrawles symptoms and the children services taking my baby from me becuase of the methadone. The children services in my area are known for taking children from their mothers for any reasons and putting them in foster homes. They dont work with you but agianst you.Im soo scared and worried.I cannot let them take my baby! doesnt matter If Im the best mother in the world they will still take my baby from me!I cannot not let that happen to me.:(
I am a good mother and I have a 3yr old girl, she is my heart and love my baby girl. I always wanted another baby but this pregnancy couldnt have come at such a bad time but it has and now all I want is whats best for my new baby and dont want to judged as a bad mom because of me being on methadone.Should I just quit while Im ahead??Im crying and scared and desperatly need the right information and help.
Please email me my name is Tanya: arbitronsoldier@hotmail.com.
I dont want anybody to email bad comments Please! Just hearing the aweful ones on here only made me feel wothless, and so terrified for being pregnant. This should be a joyous time finding out that Im gonna have a baby and not a scary and sad time.

To all the people that posted and said that pregnant women taking methadone make you sick, well it makes me sad to know that there are so many people out there criticizing others about their own free-will choices.. I am 34 weeks pregnant and on 62 mg. of methadone taken once daily.. And everything has went great!! I sleep better at night knowing that I am not out doing pills, and that I did make a very responsible decision of staying on methadone while pregnant.. I had been on methadone for almost 5 months when I got pregnant.. I had already made the decision to start the clinic, and get off pills and live a good life.. When I found out I was pregnant, I worried that my unborn baby would suffer tremendously because of methadone.. The first appt. I had with my OBGYN, he bluntly told me to stay on methadone, and that he had delivered many, many babies born to methadone dependent mothers.. That was a huge relief hearing that from someone who had dealt with cases like this several times before.. He has delivered hundreds of babies, so I trust him with this.. My doctor is a very straight up, tell you the truth whether you it hurts you or not, kind of guy.. I respect him and I know that he has taken the very best care of me and my unborn child so far.. Like I said, I am at 34 weeks, and have 6 to go.. At my last appt. my doctor told my husband and I that our baby will be monitored for a few days to see if he has withdrawal symptoms, but that everything should be fine.. He has also told me at every appt. that I have done NOTHING wrong by taking methadone while pregnant, but that I have done something great by not going out and using street drugs.. So to all those people that said we make you sick, always remember that one day, if and when your child or your grandchild is on methadone while pregnant, be supportive of them because they are doing nothing wrong.. And you will be the one in the wrong if you turn on them, or say harsh things to them.. You will be judged with the rest of us when it's all said and done, so stop judging and criticizing others, because you are going against God's word when you do that!!

anyone who thinks that you're hurting your baby by being on methadone is an idiot. there have been studies done for almost 100 years , and none of the research shows that methadone causes any birth defects of any kind. and as far as it "making you sick" and you looking down on people who are doing the best they can to keep themselves and their babies healthy, well you're just ignorant. someone who is so stupid that they judge someone for doing the very best thing they can do in their situation, well i think you shouldn't have children. you're too stupid to even know what you're talking about before opening your mouth and putting people down. thats the worst kind of person, and it makes me sick to think that you're going to have kids and raise them to be ignorant fools just like you. and as for anyone who is pregnant and on methadone, there are many concerns you have, just as in any pregnancy, but you are doing the very best you can, and that's all you can do. god bless you, your babies, and the doctors and nurses at the methadone clinics that make it possible for people who have made mistakes in the past to have healthy babies. thank you.

When I first found out I was pregnant I went diretly to the E.R. of 3 hospitals & wanted to detox.. I am currently 7 wks preganat- very 1st preganancy & am already worried & concerned about my baby &my pregnancy. I wanted to detox, but none of the 3hospitals would keep me or detox me. I cureently take 20mg of methadone a day & in the past 10mos have come down from 80mg per day to 20mg per day. I immeadiatley wanted to stop & fully detox!! However, UAB, Brookwood & St.Vincents hospitals would NOT keep me & all doctors STRONGLY advised me to stay on my dose, not to detox & that this could cause a miscarriage. This pregnancy was not planned & I- due to a history of cervical cancer, only had a 60% chance of being able to EVER become pregnant. Bircth-control was used & I strongly feel that this baby is a God-sent & if God sees fit for me to be a mom, who am I to intervene? I WILL do what my doctor's tell me, bc although it sounds scary & crazy to me, they tell me happy, healthy babies are born everyday on methadone. It saddens me to think of what my innocent new-born may have to go through if he/she is suffering from withdrawals.. I have suffered from them many times & know the pain & discomfort they bring. My plan is to give this situation to the Lord & continue my NA program, & after my child arrives- continue dropping my dose & detox fully from this addictive drug. Don't get me wrong- Mehtadone has helped me tremendously & I prasie it for getting me clean- however- I know that fully & truly being clean & sober is being OFF of all substances & chemicals. I will not give up & my child will bring me even more motivation than before.. Thank you for the information.. BL- B'ham Al

Hi all....i am a mother of 3 and pregnant with my 4th. I wasnt on any drug at all when i gave birth to my first 2 children. As for my 3rd i started takin pain meds before finding out i was pregnant and continued through the whole preganancy. My daughter was born healthy and had no withdrawl symtoms at all. I started the methadone treatment program about 2yrs ago and have been clean of all drugs since. I am now 22wks pregnant and on 110mgs of methadone a day. Yes, i am scared about the the harmful effects to my unborn child, but im also doing the best i can to keep myself clean and be the best mom i can for my other 3 children. I have done alot of research on methadone and pregnancy and for the uneducated, there is alot of research out there! i also see my clinic doctor and counsler as im suppose too and go to all my ob appointments. for a recovering addict its hard to say what ur gonna do because if u r actually recovering then u know that u have to take it one day at a time. I have found this article helpful to me so thanks to all who take the time to write these articles. for someone like myself its very helpful. IM PRAYING EVERYDAY THAT MY BABY IS BORN HEALTHY WITH NO WITHDRAWL SYMTOMS BUT IM ALSO PERPARED FOR WHATEVER THE LORD HAS IN STORE FOR ME. and for those who never have been through an addiction and are not educated on these things then i dont think u have the right to make any comment. until u live it u will never know! GOOD LUCK TO ALL

There is a simple solution for this: if you are going to take methadone, you should use protective barriers to prevent pregnancies! why would you even risk putting your child in harms way?

FYI Pregnancy Categories are not useful at all. There is no clear definition between a C or B or D so don't just use those for comfort. Do your research! Don't use your child as a guinea pig based on a stupid Pregnancy Category on a label!

Even Tylenol can be harmful. NO DRUG IS SAFE!

I think that IGNORANT people are the ones that should not be having children. It is because of people like you that we have so much hate and judgement in the world. I suppose that if someone was taking a medicine (which is what methadone is) such as an anti-depressant that they should be banned from having children as well? Or they should stop taking it making them unstable and/or in a position to possibly harm themselves or their child? How about a diabetic on insulin? Or someone on medication that is keeping them alive because they have cancer? A drug overdose can kill someone just the same as cancer or not taking insulin.. Before you judge other people and the choices they make maybe you should put yourself in the other persons shoes because until you have been there yourself I don't believe you have any right to even form an opinion about these people who are only trying to better themselves. I have a lot of respect for women in recovery who are doing the right thing and trying to move forward from their pasts and that is nothing they should be ashamed of. Shame on you! Nobody is perfect so don't throw stones if you live in a glass house.

i have to say that i am completely appalled about what some of you judgers have to say about people on methadone. first of all. just because we are on methadone does not mean we are not clean. the defenition of clean is basicallly that we are not doing any more harmful/illegal behaviours to get high. methadone does not get you high. if it does your dose is too much and you must go down on it. methadone has been a life saver for me. i just found out that i am pregnant and we worked it out that i am about 7 weeks along. i spoke to my methadone doctor about this because the father and myself had concerns. what makes you people think that if it is harmful for the baby to experience withdrawals in the first trimester that it isn't harmful for it during the 2nd or 3rd. i have many friends who have methadone babies and they are fine. no defects no learning disabilities (at least not from methadone). everything that you put into your body while pregnant is potentially harmful to the fetus.
for those people who say we have no right to bring babies into the world because we are addicts and so therefore our babies willl be addicts. a newborn baby is incapable of creating a coherent thought such as "hmmm this feels good. im gonna keep doing this even if it is harmful to me" they cant. so sure they might come out physically dependant on methadone but seriously how many of us can honestly say we actually remember the first few weeks we were out of the womb. not one of you can say that and if you do then you have some serious psychiatric issues and maybe you shouldn't be bringing a baby into this world.

i am 28 years old. 29 in march/2011. i have been on methadone since august of 2009. i have had regular clean pees since maybe october 2009. i have not used anything except nicotine (which is legal) in over a year. and i've been at a stable dose for several months now. in fact i was on my way down when i had to temporarily go back up 5mls because of my teeth. i am in excruciating pain after two extractions and a root canal from yesterday and i have no desire to use anything. except for my antibiotics and maybe some tylenol for when it gets to be too much. i have no desire/craving to use opiates. so for all intents and purposes i am clean. my body is physically dependant on methadone but i do not feel pleasure from my daily drink. in fact it is allll i can do to keep it down as it is severely bitter even with the tang and now with certain tastes/scents bothering me more than usual its getting harder.

anyone who would like to have a reasonable discussion can reach me at wateredsun@gmail.com. i willl check back every two days.

If you are ON methadone (like I am) when you find out you are pregnant (like I did!) you CANNOT go off of it or you are guaranteeing yourself a miscarriage! People who are not educated on what methadone is and how it works and affects pregnancy shouldn't throw stones.

there are 2 sides to this coin. people are on methadone for many reasons, two most popular being chronic pain and drug addiction.
both with chronic pain and addiction comes inherent risk to the fetus and mother.
now look at this from a doctors view. a pregnant women on methadone comes into your office and there is a chance that she could miscarry coming off it. would you risk your licence as an md when this mom sues you after she loses her child. no md in thier right mind would take that risk.
methadone is a drug, an addictive drug, same as all the rest.
BUT a doctor can control methodone and the dose so that other drugs are not used or abused causing more risks to the unborn child.
is it good to be taking any drugs while pregnant, no. clean and sober before pregnancy is ideal. BUT do you want to be the doctor of a mom on crack, prescription drugs, or multiple other risk taking bahaviors that an md would have to address in the infant later.
on the md side of it, its the medical profession covering thier butts. methadone creates a situation that they can control and has a reliable outcome, thats all.
in an ideal world the dr would address the issues that create and feed the addiction while teaching and weaning a pt down to be off drugs forever..... but thats too time consuming and it doesnt pay well.

I am a 27 year old mother of a 3&1/2 year old son. All pregnancys are different just like all humans are different! When we got preg. w/ our son i was @ the "clinic" for about 8 months and on 100mg daily (This was thanks to a co-worker that kept telling us everything would be fine blah blah blah) I had a great preg. didnt feel nothing!!!!My son was born in 2009 in a little hospital in Western PA. He came out in respitory distress and they had to do a emergency to get he from me. When he did arrive into this world my husband or myself didnt get to even hold him @ 1st he was blue and looked dead!!!! WOW brings tears to me now!!!Then they worked on him and our bundle of joy came to THANK YOU GOD!! Anyways that night he was taken by ambulance to another hospital like 60 miles away due to WITHDRAWLS from Methadone.I was 60 miles away from my precious boy i just got ripped away from me! He was in the neonate unit for about no lie 2 months d/t his scores were to high to detox him normally!! Also social services will be talking to you at the hospital. They were very nice to us d/t the story why i had to start methadone and was in touch w/ us only 1 time! This whole time our families thought he was there for something elese WE WENT THROUGH HELL... But now hes 3 & 1/2 hes very smart, very handsome, problem free. and now were prego w/2nd & its a girl i was on 20 mgs of meth n quit thank god i didnt have a miscarriage i due soon. I would of stayed on it but wasnt going though all this drama again!! ~Happy momma in pa

as a mother i completly understand why woman have to use methadone to lead a normal life,i am compasionate, understanding and have a lot of respect for people who have used and stuck to the programme however i have major concerns about the use of this drug during pregnancy,my daughter was on methadone whilst pregnant and was very sick finding it hard to keep down any food/liquid at all.she carried my grandson full term.he was born suffering from withdrawels and was in special baby care for 8 days.he was a poor feeder being sick after every feed.he is 6 years old now and for all of his short life he has suffered with his digestive system, has fine motor skill dificulties, poor co-ordination,speach dificulties and has autism,it could be methadone was NOT t o blame for his condition.but what if it was?

Every doctor or nurse i have spoken with has told me definitally not to quit cold turkey in risk of miscarriage one doc told me to slowly lower my dose, whether the baby is inside or out it is going to withdrawel why not sooner than later to help prevent harm the medicine may do but it is all so confusing with this. So hard to tell if you are doing harm or good, but doesnt that come with everything in life. i believe if u were on methadone and got pregnant then great because everybody deserves something so beautiful. Just try to make the best decisions for your baby, as any mother would do!! Anybody that judges GO TO HELL!!! You not God who are u to say who deserves to have a child or not. God has givin me a gift who are u to say I don't deserve it and that he is wrong!!! Go somewhere!! Cuz i'm still smiling!!

Hey Everyone, I am 28 weeks pregnant and using methadone 100 mgs a day. I am so scared about my baby and thew ithdraws she will go through and wondering if anyone out there is on a similar dose knowing what to expect. This pregnancy has been hard overall, I had gastric bypass done just over a year ago and due to back surgery and gastric bypass had been on quite a few prescription pills. When finding out I was pregnant we decided that Methadone was best for us and baby and since then I can rest a little better but I am still scared of the outcome and hoping someone can share some experiences with having babies at that higher Dose. Thank you so much!!

I just need to tell my story. I am 9 weeks pregnant with my first child. I have been clean and sober for two years, with the help of methadone which I have been on for almost two years. I have been an alcoholic all my life and quit drinking when I was prescribed percs for tooth pain. From that day forward I was hopelessly addicted. I have a university education and come from a good family. I ended up working as a prostitute to pay for my drugs. I lost everything. Two years ago I had enough. I went to treatment and slowly put my life back together. Now I have a good job and a loving boyfriend who has been clean for 5 years.
We weren't trying to get pregnant. I feel happy but scared. I feel an immense sense of guilt for being on methadone. I feel selfish and like a bad person. I am afraid to tell people. I have been doing a lot of reading and feel a little better from what I have learned.
I do feel like my baby will grow up to be an addict because my partner and I are both addicts (in recovery) and the baby will be born dependant. I feel sad because addiction is a HORRIBLE disease. I tell myself that we will explain to our child the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and keep her/him educated but I still feel guilty.
Anyone have a story to share..?

I have been on methadone for over 6 years. I have had 2 children while on methadone and both were completely and totally healthy. No withdrawal symptons whatsoever. My oldest is 5 and in school and is one the smartest in her class. She is actually ahead developmentally as is my youngest. As for all of you all that are being so judgemental, maybe you should try to understand someones situation first. I am a Registered Nurse who was prescribed Oxycontin for severe back pain. When I got pregnant with my first child, my doctor actually switched me to methadone because he said that was much safer than staying on the oxycontin or quitting cold turkey because withdrawal symptoms could cause a miscarriage. I commend all pregnant women and mothers who are on methadone because you are doing the best thing in the world for your baby.

The very first comment on here by someone is is absolutely ignorant is ridiculous. I wish people would research things before they opened there mouths or put stupid judgmental comments on these sites. they are the stupid ones not methedone users who are trying to get clean. STOPPING METHEDONE WHEN YOU ARE PREGNANT COULD CAUSE MISCARRIAGE!!!!! I'm sorry but im not willing to take that chance. To the person who wrote the first comment : Babies that are born on methedone are healthy babies who grow up to be strong, healthy , smart adults. I hope that this person , never gets pregnant because if you would be willing to risk miscarriage and not listen to medical experts, then you shouldn't be able to have children. Talk to medical experts and research some info before you shoot your mouth off on something you know clearly nothing about! Ignorant people piss me off.

People who judge before learning all the facts are not even worthy to listen to....I am on 60mg of methadone and I am 6 weeks pregnant. I have been on methadone for a year and 3 months. My opiate addiction started after a previous misscarriage (not placing blame just stating the trigger). People think that you choose to be an addict and that if you are a recovering addict you do not deserve children..that is BS!! No one CHOOSES to be an addict or they could just CHOOSE to not be one. I have been clean well over a year but do not trust myself to live life completely without support. If I were to not have methadone I likely would have relapsed and if I had gotten pregnant then the odds of having a healthy child are extremely low. But because I did get clean on methadone before i got pregnant my child has a very good chance of being perfectly health. Obviously there is the fear that it may harm my child but that passes when I think about what the other drugs would have done. For all of the women out there who are pregnant and on methadone, do not let anyone tell you that you are not worthy of that child! YOU ARE!!! You have come this far in your recovery and that alone speaks volume on your character! Take care of yourself and ignore anyone who is not supportive!

to the person who said if you are on methadone just dont have children....have you had children? have you been pregnant? it sure doesnt seem like it...Some women want a child so badly that it hurts! yes methadone is a drug and it can have effects on the child but there is studies that show that children born to parents on methadone generally live wonderful healthy happy lives! The way your stating it, if someone needs to be on methadone for 6 years (some people do need it that long) then they should go on for those 6 years unhappy because someone thinks that they shouldnt have a cchild! If you were put on a medication for the next 10 years and wanted a child are you just gunna not have a child? no! love isnt logical! and its not like the woman are out there doing hard drugs in an unsafe environment in unsafe amounts and unsafe ways. If you want someone to "advise" how about you go talk to the women who are doing hard drugs in unsafe ways and tell them that if they go to methadone that their babies will be much healthier then if they continue the way they are....pick your battles and know that facts....also take into consideration other peoples feelings an opinions...

People who say that if you are on methadone you are still a drug addict are wrong...to be addicted to something there needs to be two things...a physical need for the drug (yes you have that for methadone) and the mental addiction, being willing to do whatever to get that drug and theincreasing need for that drug (which you dont have with methadone) you do not get high off of methadone! Would doctors use methadone to stop addiction if itself brought on more addiction? NO Think about it before you speak (or type)

I agree with those who are for methadone maintainance during pregnancy. I am a 6yr recovering addict from painkillers and I have been clean for one year. I planned on having one last child, but was afraid to do so because I was in treatment. But after research and speaking to mothers who have had children while in treatment, I decided to give it a shot. With gods blessing, I did become pregnant and I almost 36 weeks pregnant. Me and my baby boy are doing just fine, and now that Im sober, life is good for me and my family. Can't wait to meet baby number four, who is also my first born in treatment and it doesn't feel that much different from the rest. So don't pay those negative commentors any mind. Do what you need to do for you and yours.

I am a 31 year old mother of a beautiful 3 year old boy with autism. I was on pain management in 07 when I got pregnant(unexpectedly after not menstrating for 2 years nice joke God)> After getting dropped by my pm doc I found my only choice was the methadone clinic. I had a lot of reservations but everyone kept telling me my baby would be fine and if I wanted I could wean off in my 2nd trimester when it was safer. The methadone was a god send for my pain...I shattered my femur and several vertabrae in a car accident in 05. When my 2nd trimester came tho my doc at the clinic easily talked me out of weaning myself off> He said there was risk of miscarraige and Ive had enough of those and honestly I was scared to think of the pain I would be in with no meds and the pain me and my baby would go thru during the withdrawl period which is about a month...alot longer than most other opiates which last 7 to 10 days. So I stayed on 90 mgs until I delivered my son....and then the horror began. Watching my son go thru withdrawls was the worst most guilt ridden time in my life. He was in the hospital for a week and sent home on tincture of opium> After having him home 3 days I knew something was very wrong. My son spent the next 49 days at AI DuPont Childrens Hospital NICU suffering from withdrawl and a kidney infection caused by a birth defect hydronephrosis....he only has 1 working kidney> The other is "dead". They discovered this when I was about 18 weeks pregnant during an ultrasound. I spent every day and night with my son only leaving his side to get my own methadone.I was so depressed and guilty I started taking xanax to relieve the stress...which only complicated my life further. As my son got older I realized that he wasnt acting normally toward people. He would ignore most everyone but me and his father...even people he saw frequently. He was diagnosed with autism offically at 2 although we knew he had it long before. He is doing much better now with early intervention schooling we had to fight tooth and nail for but he is talking and will most likely turn out to be a pretty "normal" kid....He is incredible tho> He is loving and cute and he has a magnetic personality. Which brings me to today. I have been on pain management for the same accident...this time already on methadone. This time I am choosing to wean off over my next 8 weeks. I wont see another of my children suffer like my son did. Although I am honestly just as scared about being without pain relief this time....I know I just have to be strong and that my husband and God will help me find a way thru it..I would rather go thru the withdrawl with my child than sit there day after day helpless to do a thing to make him better> Also although I can not say for certain the methadone caused his kidney or autism problems I cant help but wonder. So This time I choose to do this my way instead of their way. Thats my story. Thanks for listening

I have a ten month old girl in foster care in my home. She was addicted to Methadone when born. She cried constantly for the first five months of her life, and still wakes up six or seven times during the night crying.
We are getting her three week old sister as soon as she is released from the hosptial. I was told that she crys constantly until she wears herself out and than falls asleep. These babies may not all have withdrawals when they are born, I dont know. But my two foster daughters do. What a shame to come into the world crying for the first months of your life. Are they in pain? Is that why they cry all the time. They must be. I feel so sorry for them. I will love them both as if they were my own.

Women shouldnt be using durgs if they arnt on birthcontrol. WHt kind of people are these? Makes me sick. Yes i Understand that if they are addicted to a drug this will be safer for teh baby than the other drug or how ever you have justifyed it. BUT the point of this is.... If you can get pregnet you should be charged with child abuse if u become pregnet and are addicted and have ot have this treatment. WOuld u give you born child pills and be ok with that?????? Not to mention after the baby is born they have to be put on Morphine for almost 2 months to prevent withdrawls. WHY THE FUCK do these DR keep convincing people this is OK. IT's not ok. These people have problums and shouldnt have children anyway if they cant even take care of themselves

i am pregnant with my second child and am on methadone; i was on methadone with my first born and she is OK. it did no harm long term to her she did however experience some withdrawl when she was first born; but because i was followed correctly through my whole pregnancy the doctors were able to help her through it a lot. i just want any pregnant women to know it's much safer to use methadone controlled then to just continue using the drugs; hope this is helpful

ive been on methadone for almost 5 yrs off and on and if i wasnt i would off lost my 2 beautiful children to a miscarrge or overdose iam not on methadone straight for 13 months and now tryin to come off of it slowly i am ready to be 100 per cent clean and stop using methadone forever! but methadone saved mined and my childrens lives, ive had diff. from taking methadone durin preg. both my children were depended on it for the 1st month but they are prefectly normal kids and i now realize what i was doing to not only me but my children.its natural to worry about being on methadone while being pregnant, you wont be a very good mother if not lol, but everything will work out for the best i am proof of that.i was on only 50mg and my babies still felt it, but i dont regret it cause if i did my kids would more than likely not be here and that i couldnt live without!!!! and YES LIFE DOES GO ON AGAIN! to other people who are against it try putting yourself in someone elses shoes for once its not an easy decision, get educated before you talk about something you have NO CLUE about and are going by WHAT YOU HEARD!!! INROGANCE IS EXCALTLY WHAT YOU ARE.
FOR ALL WHO IS STILL CLEAN CONGRATS ITS A HARD BATTLE EVRYDAY, JUST KNOWING YOU MADE IT THROUGH TODAY WITHOUT USING IS ALL THAT MATTERS
PEACE LOVE TLF
